Subject: Tell your U.S. Representative to support Myanmar's civil disobedience movement
Friend,
I just wrote my U.S. representative to support Myanmar's civil disobedience movement by sponsoring the House Resolution 134.
On February 1, 2021, the Myanmar military seized power in a coup d'etat, imprisoning Aung San Suu Kyi, senior figures from her ruling party, and prominent pro-democracy and human rights advocates.
In response to this coup, young people in Myanmar have taken to the streets in a new #CivilDisobedienceMovement (CDM) demanding an end to military rule. They are calling on the international community to impose tough and targeted sanctions on the military, including its business conglomerates Myanmar Economic Holding Limited (MEHL) and Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC).
The military is now brutally cracking down, injuring and killing peaceful pro-democracy protesters. It is vital that Congress honor CDM's call for tougher targeted sanctions on both military officers and the companies that they own and control.
U.S. Representative Andy Levin has introduced the bipartisan House Resolution 134 condemning the Myanmar military coup. The resolution further calls on the U.S. Administration to impose new tougher targeted sanctions on the Myanmar military and its business interests in line with the call of Myanmar's civil disobedience movement.
Today, tell your U.S. Representative to support and co-sponsor House Resolution 134.
